DETOXIFICATION
There
have
always
been methods of increasing the body’s detoxification and
elimination processes: fasting to reduce
digestive
and liver burden; herbs to stimulate the digestion and/or liver
flow; sweats or hydrotherapy to increase the
elimination function of the skin and lymph system.
THE MOST
VALUABLE MEANS THAT WE HAVE of increasing our level of health
and protecting us from disease is through maintaining optimal
function of these vital processes –
selection, detoxification and excretion.
Detoxification methods, so crucial for health, have probably
never been so underutilized as now. Many dis-eases can be
wholly
or partially attributed to
toxicity
of the
liver and/or bowel. We have only scratched the surface of
scientifically understanding why the age-old practice of
detoxification is
imperative
for good health and
vitality.
Physiologist
Dr. Despopoulos eloquently describes these vital
concepts of selection, detoxification and excretion. “The
diet
contains not only substances that are useful to the organism for
its growth and energy balance, but also
physiologically
inert
or even
injurious material.
They may also be present in inspired air. The organism is able
to distinguish between the useful and the undesirable substances
and can reject the latter at three levels: in the
gastrointestinal (GI) tract, in cellular
uptake
and metabolism, and in the kidneys. The first distinction is
made in the process of eating…In
the
GI tract
the specificity of the digestive enzymes and mechanism of
absorption ensures that predominantly useful substances are
broken down and absorbed...From the intestine, the absorbed
substances pass to
the
LIVER
where as much as 95% may be extracted from the blood in the
first passage.
The liver cell makes a further distinction
between useful substances,
which
are stored or metabolized and inert or harmful substances, the
majority of which undergo
detoxification…
by various mechanisms.
The lungs
also play a role of an excreting organ. They receive the blood
that has passed through the liver en route from the intestine.
The lungs are especially effective in trapping fat soluble
substances (e.g. serotonin , methadone), which are then
inactivated and to some extent excreted in the bronchial mucus.
In this
way, the
brain, which is particularly sensitive, is protected from
damage.”
You can
see that normal physiology depends heavily on “the process of
eating…to distinguish between useful and
undesirable substances.” Unfortunately, for various reasons, we
are not always able to access this vital method of
rejection.
We must
rely on the GI tract for proper digestion of what we have
selected. Many people have insufficient amounts or
types
of digestive enzymes, or have consumed substances that have
altered the absorptive mechanism of the intestinal
wall,
i.e. antibiotics, NSAIDS (i.e. ibuprofen), prednisone, etc.
Therefore,
the liver
bears a greater burden to extract its 95% of these “inert or
injurious material” from the blood. Over time, depending
on
many factors (age, dietary
choices,
fat intake, health history, etc.) the liver becomes
swollen
and FAT accumulates around the hepatocytes (liver cells)
and
it becomes LESS efficient at removing toxic substances. This
natural and VITAL process of the body to DETOXIFY
itself is
minimized. The blood becomes more laden with waste products.
Our
organs and tissues are exposed to an increased concentration of
these unwanted substances, and the blood becomes less capable of
removing
new
products
of metabolism…a vicious cycle continues. Our individual
requirement for
detoxification
depends on many factors, including: food selection; digestive
efficiency;
exposure
to environmental toxins (exogenous)
from workplace, home environment, air and water quality,
prescription and recreational drugs
(including alcohol and cigarettes), hobbies, etc.; stress
factors (endogenous) increase chemicals produced
in
the body needing to be disarmed and discarded; and
excretion/elimination efficiency (kidney and bowel function,
sweating, exercise pattern for regular expiration of toxins
through the lungs and skin). in the practice of
Naturopathic Medicine
fasting
and
cleansing have always been important parts of treatment and
prevention strategies. Volumes of research in
the last
twenty years support these treatments, and further reinforce the
value
- No, the imperative
– of fasting and
cleansing, both preventatively and as a way to address many
health issues. It is important to choose a fasting or
detoxification plan that is suitable for you. If you are
healthy, that is, if you do not have any health problems and are
not
taking any prescription medications, you have more flexibility
in your choice of a program. If you have health
complaints and are taking over the counter or prescription
medications it is wise to have the supervision of a professional
with
training and expertise in this field. An educated and
experienced practitioner can design and monitor a program that
is safe
and effective for you.

COLONICS:
THEY ARE GOOD FOR YOU!
Many health authorities believe that illness as well as good
health begins in the colon. Every cell, every organ is affected
by the condition of the colon. The best food when it is not
properly eliminated is no better than the worst. A properly
functioning
colon leads to health, happiness, and longevity.
Debbie Kirby– I am the new Certified Colon-Hydro Therapist. I
joined the YNC team the first week of May 2004. It is a real
pleasure and joy for me to be here. I started my training with
Helen Wood of the Wood Institute who is the Colonic
Chairperson
for the State of Florida and an Understudy of the Developer of
the Wood Hygienic System. I took an Intensive course and test
to receive a certification as a Colon-Hydro Therapist. Following
that I spent six weeks under the direct supervision of Cheri
Smith our former Colon Hydro Therapist who has been with YNC for
the past five years.
Holiday Stress/ Winter Blahs? Seasonal Illness? Try a Meyer’s
Cocktail!
The Meyers’ cocktail is a 60 cc IV infusion packed full of the

The Meyer’s Cocktail can play an important role in sustaining
and maintaining optimal health. The ingredients promote
increased energy, immune support, and the
improvement of general metabolic processes. If you feel run
down, stressed-out, fatigued, or you are trying to prevent
or
recover from an illness, a Meyer’s cocktail may be a most
helpful addition to your holiday nourishment.. Your doctor
can
prescribe a unique combination designed specifically to meet
your needs. If it’s time to take care of YOU, don’t delay. Call
for your Meyer’s Cocktail appointment today. It usually takes
30 minutes and can help you fend off a cold or the flu and
