Acupuncture
Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world. Originating in China more than 5,000 years ago, it is based on the belief that health is achieved by balancing yin and yang in the body (yin representing cold, slow, or passive aspects of the person, and yang representing hot, excited, or active aspects). Disease, then, is caused by an imbalance of yin and yang, leading to a blockage in the flow of qi (pronounced chee), the energy life force, along meridians on the body.
To free qi and regulate the nervous, immune, and circulatory systems, the acupuncturist inserts tiny sterilized needles into specific points on the body that connect to certain meridians. Points and meridians are
selected to relieve conditions including:
- Arthritis
- Allergies
- Bronchitis, asthma, and the common cold
- Dermatological disorders
- Diabetes
- Gastrointestinal disorders
- Infertility/impotence
- Insomnia and depression
- Knee and elbow joint pain
- Low back pain/sciatica
- Migraines
- Muscle sprain/strain
- Excessive appetite
Practiced around the world and used by millions of Americans, acupuncture is considered safe when practiced by qualified practitioners. At YNC, acupuncture is performed only by board-certified, licensed professionals. Consistent with FDA requirements, all needles are sterile, nontoxic, and discarded after a single use.
People experience acupuncture differently, but most feel no or minimal pain as the needles are inserted and removed. Some people feel energized by treatment, while others feel relaxed. Treatment may take place over a period of several weeks or more.
