PART 2 - THE GUT: CANDIDA ALBICANS (YEAST OVERGROWTH)

By Nirala Jacobi, N.D.

In part 1 of this series we looked at the function of a healthy digestive tract. In part 2 we will investigate

the overgrowth of a pathogenic organism called Candida albicans, a common yeast or fungus. Candida is an opportunistic organism that lives in the human digestive tract. In a healthy gut this yeast is kept in check by the acidity of the environment, healthy bacteria (I.e. lactobacillus acidophilus), and by the proper motility of the colon. When conditions change, this organism proliferates and can cause a staggering amount of symptoms that are seemingly unrelated to the digestive tract. The frequent use of antibiotics in our society is the biggest culprit. Antibiotics only target bacteria, so they not only kill the bacteria that are causing your sinus infection, but also the healthy ones in your gut! Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are two of the more well known species of beneficial bacteria in our gut. Rather than killing yeast, they actually attach themselves to the lining of the intestines to prevent candida from invading the mucous membrane. These good bugs also create a more acidic (hence the name “acidophilus”) environment which also wards off the yeast, an alkaline surrounding. With this natural defense gone the yeast can now attach itself and start the process of burrowing into the mucous membrane. The other reason yeast overgrowth is so common in the US is that we are a nation addicted to sugar and simple carbohydrates—the perfect fuel for yeast. Once candida has a foot in the door and continues to be fed it starts proliferating exponentially. The surface area of your gut is the size of a tennis court—imagine that surface being attacked by a microscopic organism! In addition to your gut, any place where it’s moist and warm is a potential yeast breeding ground….sinuses, vaginal tract, throat, and anus are all possibilities. A recent article from Mayo Clinic states that over 90% of recurrent sinusitis is caused by fungus! Frequent antibiotic use therefore only worsens the situation in the long run.

Besides sinus problems, yeast can cause many other symptoms: fatigue, “brain fog,” wandering aches and pains, rashes, gas and bloating, diarrhea or constipation, depression and/or anxiety, and many more. For a complete understanding or yeast syndrome refer to “The Yeast Connection” by William Crook, MD or “ The Missing Diagnosis” by Orion Truss, MD.

So what can be done? Our approach is threefold:

1) Stop feeding the yeast: avoid sugar (including natural sugars), white flour and many other wheat products, dairy (contains lactose—a milk sugar), and alcohol.

2) Kill the yeast: we prescribe natural antifungals.

3) Reestablish normal flora: take a good quality lactobacillus and bifidobacterium.

The key to eliminating candida is patience! It takes time to clean up that tennis court! On average it takes about 3 months to feel much improved—but it takes 6 months to two years to eradicate the yeast! A good resource is our nutritionist, Cindy Woodford, RD. She can help you design a candida diet that works for you.

DETOX CLASSES AVAILABLE!

climbNeed a little help with that New Year’s resolution? Want to fight off the effects of winter? Is getting a head start on spring important to you? The Yellowstone Naturopathic Clinic is pleased to announce that we’re offering three new detoxification classes designed to help with all of the above! Basic detoxification classes will be taught from January to March, followed by an advanced class in April to meet the additional needs of the many people who have (and will) complete the basic class. Detoxification classes are good for anyone, but persons who have skin problems, hormonal issues, digestive complaints, or who are trying to lead a tobacco, caffeine, or refined sugar-free lifestyle will find them to be an essential part of their transition towards health. These classes, while not designed specifically for weight loss, are also a great start to a weight loss/fitness program and will give you many ideas that you can continue to use to achieve your goals.

The basic class costs $200 and the advanced class costs $140. Colon hydrotherapy, saunas, and other forms of hydrotherapy are not included in the cost of the course, but special discount packages will be made available to course participants. It is the policy of the Yellowstone Naturopathic Clinic not to perform colon hydrotherapy on non-clinic patients. Call to reserve your space.

YOGA CLASSES

Yoga is being offered at the Annex on Sundays and Wednesdays with Greg Jahn and on Tuesdays with Deb Brown.

Greg Jahn draws on 33 years experience with yoga, meditation, massage, men’s work, and group process for healing the whole person.

YOGA: Embodying The Sacred
“If anything is sacred, the human body is sacred.” (Walt Whitman) Observe Sunday morning with sacred practice, grounded in the body. Yoga basics will be supplemented with varying body-centered, transformative practices. Community teachers in differing fields will co-lead with different themes: rhythm, dance, massage, meditation, voicing, expressive arts, and other modalities. Feeling disconnected and missing supportive community? Come join the potential synergy of like-minded friends. Suitable for all levels. “There is one thing that, when cultivated and regularly practiced, leads to deep spiritual intention, to peace, to mindfulness and clear comprehension, to vision and knowledge, to a happy life here and now, and to the culmination of wisdom and awakening. And, what is that one thing? It is the mindfulness centered on the body.” The Sunday class is 9-10:30 am. The cost is “dana” or practice of giving (suggested $8 donation). Pot Luck Brunch the second Sunday of each month, following the class.

Deb Brown has studied with Gary Kraftskow, a yoga master who uses Yoga as a holistic therapy for healing and comes from the Viniyoga tradition. She will share these teachings which will give the student simple yet powerful tools to support the process balancing their health. No yoga background is necessary for Deb’s classes. She suggests you come in loose clothing (tights or sweatpants and layer your clothing to be able to adjust body temperature). An empty stomach is also recommended.

Deb will be offering the following “Yoga For Wellness” Workshops:
Saturday, January 25th...Yoga For The Immune System..1-3 pm
Saturday, February 8th...Yoga For Depression...9-11 am
Thursday, April 3rd...Yoga For Menopause...6-8 pm

Pre-registration is necessary to reserve your place. The charge will be $25 per workshop. Register early as class size is limited to 8. Stop by the clinic or if you have any questions call Deb Brown at 896-0446. “Please join me for a personally empowering workshop which can offer a yoga practice which will support your journey toward health.”

PROBIOTICS at the YNC Dispensary

Our clinic has always proudly recommended the acidophilus product developed in England by Nigel Plummer, Ph.D. Dr. Plummer, prompted by his research on the vital role that these organisms play in maintaining proper immune function began to produce the product HMF or HLC. His most recent data: to be published in The Lancet-one of the world’s leading research journals, indicates that the proper probiotic, if used in sufficient quantity while on a course of antibiotics, protects the ecology of the digestive tract and prevents the development of serious infections that often occur as a result of antibiotic use. HLC is guaranteed to contain 5 billion viable organisms per capsule and maintains its potency for years when kept frozen! Feel free to ask for more information on HLC at our dispensary. There is not better probiotic in the entire world!

HYDROTHERAPY CORNER

feetBy William Powers, N.D.

Now that cold and flu season is in full-swing, here is an idea for home treatment to help ward off the common cold. The warming socks treatment is best if repeated for three nights in a row at the first signs of a cold, and also is useful for sore throat or any inflammation or infection of the throat, ear infections, headaches, migraines, nasal congestion, coughs, and sinus infections.

This treatment acts reflexively to increase circulation and decrease congestion in the upper respiratory passages, head, and throat. It has a sedating action and many patients report that they sleep much better during the treatment. This treatment is also effective for pain relief and increases the healing response during acute infections. In order to do this treatment you will need, 1 pair thin cotton socks (athletic socks work fine), 1 pair thick wool socks, a towel and a warm bath or footbath. The directions are as follows:

  1. Take a pair of cotton socks and soak them completely with cold water. If you tend to be cold or have low vitality, try using cool water during the first treatment rather than cold water.
  2. Warm your feet. The treatment may not be as effective if your feet are not warmed first. Warming can be accomplished by soaking your feet in warm water for at least 5-10 minutes or taking a warm bath for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Dry off your feet and body with a dry towel.
  4. Wring the cotton socks out thoroughly so they do not drip and place the socks on your feet.
  5. Put the thick wool socks over the cotton socks.
  6. Get in bed. Cover well and sleep all night with socks on, it should be relaxing and not uncomfortably cold. If you are unable to sleep because of the cold socks consider removing the socks and soaking your feet again, this time using cool rather than cold water to wet the cotton socks. Your feet and the cotton socks should be warm and dry in the morning. If your feet are cool or the cotton sock is still damp, consider increasing the length of the hot foot soak.

As an alternative or complement to warming socks try throat or chest warming compresses. Warm the throat or chest with a hot washcloth or shower. Dry the skin thoroughly and apply a thin cotton wrap (to throat) or thin cotton T-shirt (to chest) that has been soaked in cold water and wrung out thoroughly. Cover this with a wool scarf (throat) or wool sweater (chest). Go to bed. By morning, the scarf or T-shirt should be warm and dry. The same cautions for the warming socks treatment apply here.

This treatment should be used with caution on anyone with decreased or compromised sensory abilities such as infants, the elderly, or diabetics as they are at greater risk for heat and cold injuries. Do not use this treatment over areas of hemorrhage, gastric ulcers, malignancy, peripheral vascular disease or conditions aggravated by extreme cold. If you have any questions or concerns, ask your Naturopathic Doctor!
